Prayers for People in Need: Simple Prayers for the Hungry, Lonely and Struggling

Prayers for people in need are one of the simplest and most powerful ways to care for others. When we pray for our neighbours, we bring their needs before God, and our own hearts are opened to see where we can help.

At Friendship House in Brantford, a Christian non-denominational charity, prayer and practical help go hand in hand. This page offers short prayers you can pray today, Scripture to pray along with, and ideas for turning prayer into action. Bible quotations are from the King James Version.

Quick answer

How can I pray for people in need?

Pray simply and specifically: name the need, such as hunger, loneliness, illness or grief, and ask God for provision, comfort and hope. Pray for the people helping too, and ask God to show you how you can help. Scripture invites us to bring every need to God: “in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6).

Why we pray for others

The Bible encourages us to pray for one another. Paul wrote: “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2), and James reminds us that “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16).

Praying for people in need also changes us. It keeps our eyes open to the people around us and softens our hearts toward them.

A prayer for the hungry

Lord, You know every empty cupboard and every empty plate. Please provide for families who are hungry today, and for children who go to school without breakfast. Give them daily bread and people who will share with them, and make us generous enough to help. Amen.

Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). You can read the whole Lord’s Prayer on Bible Gateway: Matthew 6:9-13 (opens in a new tab).

A prayer for the lonely

Father, be near to those who feel forgotten tonight: people living alone, older neighbours, newcomers far from home and anyone who has no one to talk to. Let them know they are loved. Send them friends and a warm welcome, and help us to be those friends. Amen.

The Psalms promise: “God setteth the solitary in families” (Psalm 68:6). Our guide to ways to cope with loneliness (opens in a new tab) has practical ideas for reaching out.

A prayer for those without work

Lord, we pray for people who have lost their jobs or cannot find work. Calm their fears, give them wisdom for each decision, and open doors to good, steady work. Provide for their families in the meantime, and remind them that their worth does not come from a paycheque. Amen.

A prayer for the sick and suffering

Jesus, You healed the sick and touched those others avoided. Bring healing, comfort and rest to everyone who is ill in body or mind. Strengthen caregivers, guide doctors and nurses, and give hope to those who are waiting and worried. Amen.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

A prayer for the grieving

God of all comfort, hold close those who are mourning. Be with them in the empty chair, the quiet house and the hard anniversaries. Give them the peace that passes understanding, and surround them with people who will listen and stay. Amen.

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart” (Psalm 34:18). Our guide on grief during the holidays (opens in a new tab) shares ways to support someone who is mourning.

A prayer for people without a warm home

Lord, we pray for people who are cold tonight, who have no safe place to sleep, or who are worried about paying rent or heat. Provide shelter, warmth and safety. Move our community to care, and give wisdom to everyone working to help. Amen.

A prayer for those who help

Father, bless everyone who serves people in need: volunteers, food bank workers, nurses, teachers, neighbours and friends. Give them strength when they are tired, patience when it is hard and joy in their work. Help them to see You in the faces of the people they serve. Amen.

“Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).

Pray, then act

Prayer is often the first step toward helping. After you pray, ask God to show you one practical thing you can do, then do it.

Praying together

Prayer is also something we can share. Families can pray for one need at dinner each night, small groups can keep a prayer list, and children can draw pictures of the people they are praying for.
